4. How We Use Your Data
We use the data we collect for the following purposes only:
- To operate the FocusEd platform: triggering restriction activation and deactivation based on beacon proximity and class schedule.
- To send notifications: tamper alerts to parents, class session alerts, and billing notifications.
- To process subscriptions: managing parent billing through Stripe.
- To support schools: helping administrators configure zones, schedules, and whitelists.
- To improve the platform: using aggregated, anonymized usage data to identify bugs and improve performance. No individual student data is used for product development without explicit consent.
- To comply with legal obligations: retaining records as required by Canadian law.
We do not use student data for advertising, profiling, machine learning training, or any commercial purpose other than operating the service.
5. Children's Privacy
FocusEd is used by students who may be under the age of 18. We take the privacy of minors extremely seriously. Our practices regarding children's data are as follows:
- No student under 18 is enrolled in FocusEd without the explicit consent of a parent or legal guardian.
- We do not knowingly collect any data from a student's device beyond what is described in Section 3.
- We do not create advertising profiles for any user, and we especially do not do so for minors.
- Student data is never sold, licensed, or shared with any third party for commercial purposes.
- Parents can view, correct, and delete all data associated with their child at any time. See Section 6.
- We retain student data only for as long as the student is actively enrolled. See Section 9.
FocusEd is designed to comply with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and is structured to align with Alberta's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) as it applies to school environments.
6. Parental Consent and Control
Parents and guardians have full control over their child's enrollment in FocusEd at all times:

- Review: Parents can view all data associated with their child within the Parent App, including beacon events and restriction logs.
- Correct: Parents can update emergency contacts and enrollment details at any time.
- Withdraw: Parents can unenroll their child at any time. Upon unenrollment, restriction enforcement ceases immediately on the student's device.
- Delete: Parents can request full deletion of their child's data by contacting hello@focused.education. Deletion is completed within 30 days.
7. Data Storage and Location
All FocusEd data — including student proximity events, parent accounts, and school configurations — is stored on servers located in Canada. We do not transfer student data outside of Canadian jurisdiction.
Our infrastructure is hosted on cloud services with Canadian data residency options. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit using industry-standard encryption (TLS 1.2+ for transit; AES-256 for storage).
8. Data Sharing
We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with advertisers. We share data with third parties only in the following limited circumstances:
- Stripe: Parent subscription and billing data is processed by Stripe, Inc. Stripe's privacy policy applies to payment data. We do not store payment card details on our servers.
- Cloud infrastructure providers: Our hosting provider processes data solely to deliver the platform. They are bound by contractual data processing agreements.
- Push notification services: Apple APNs and Google FCM are used solely to deliver in-app notifications to enrolled devices.
- Legal requirements: We may disclose data if required to do so by a valid court order, law, or regulatory authority in Canada.
We do not use student data for any purpose other than operating the FocusEd platform.

- Upon unenrollment: Restriction enforcement ceases immediately. Beacon event logs are retained for 90 days for school reporting purposes, then deleted.
- Upon deletion request: All personal data associated with a student or parent account is purged within 30 days of a written deletion request to hello@focused.education.
- School accounts: Retained while the school subscription is active. Deleted within 60 days of subscription termination upon request.
